Fear of Writing

Theatreworks
2011

Theatrework’s play, ‘Fear of Writing’, which deals with issues of self-censorship in Singapore, starts off quite interestingly with a very convincing announcement that they had been asked by ‘the authorities’ to cancel the entire show as a part of its opening act.

To represent the idea of ‘self-censorship’, lines were employed to cancel out the play title, as well as every single page of the play’s accompanying publication. Blank image boxes also appeared on the cover, suggesting that none of the photos were spared during the censorship process.
